Limited edition 2014 reissue LP on 120-gram vinyl.
The Cannonball Adderley Sextet capture lightning in a bottle with this breathtaking live album "In New York." Recorded over two dates at the Village Vanguard in January 1962, the sextet had just finished filling it's ranks 3 weeks earlier. Eager to impress, all six members tear into Cannonball's brand of jazz that brought soul music into jazz, with a healthy dose of R&B and an unshakable swing sensibliity. There is an irrepressible happiness to the music as it chews though bop and hard bop progressions.
Cannonball Adderley is the star on his alto sax, but he gives lots of room for the others to contribute mightily. His brother Nat won't be outdone on the coronet. Newcomer to the band Yusef Lateef fits in splendidly with an edgy tenor sax, along with flute and oboe contributions. Lateef also wrote the songs "Planet Earth" and "Syn-Anthesia." Pianist Joe Zawinul delivers "Scotch and Soda" before taking Cannonball's blending of jazz and soul to heart by later leading in the creation of fusion-the blending of rock and jazz-while starting the band The Weather Report. The rhythm section snaps with electricity as Louis Hayes mans the drums and the incomparable Sam Jones takes bass, also contributing "Cannon's Theme." Critics still rave about this being one of the seminal albums by Adderley.
With original copies hard to find, this reissue is perfect for jazz fans wanting to get the fullness of the audio experience on this limited edition 120-gram vinyl.
