Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Ray Brown & Jake Hanna - Arrival / 2CD set
2003 CD collection.
After having just played the Concord Summer Festival (which later became the Concord Jazz Festival) jazz guitar legends Herb Ellis and Joe Pass – who were at that time without recording contracts – asked Concord Summer Festival founder/organizer, Carl Jefferson, to produce a record for them. The result would be Concord Jazz’s first recording – the acclaimed Jazz/Concord (released in 1973). Jefferson again booked Ellis and Pass, with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna.
Having the foresight to record their fiery, live festival performance, the jazz guitar classic Seven, Come Eleven became Jefferson’s – and the then fledgling Concord Jazz label’s – second release. These two ground-breaking recordings not only reflect the auspicious beginnings of a little jazz label that would grow into an internationally lauded record company with a catalog of over a thousand recordings, but also – as any jazz guitar aficionado will tell you – form an essential chapter in jazz guitar history.
