Recorded in 1981 at the height of the bassist's career, six years before his untimely death, Word of Mouth showcases Pastorius' compositional skills, as well as a starstudded big band including Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and Tom Scott on reeds, trumpeter Chuck Findley, the easily recognizable Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Howard Johnson on tuba, drummers Jack DeJohnette and Peter Erskine, and percussionist Don Alias.
