Vinyl LP
Max Roach’s only album as a leader for Riverside was recorded late in 1958, with one of his most unusual bands. From 1954, when he began his memorable partnership with Clifford Brown, Roach had worked with two-horn lineups that included Harold Land followed by Sonny Rollins on tenor sax and, after Brown’s tragic death, Kenny Dorham on trumpet.
This "New Quintet" had an outstanding tenorman in George Coleman, and a youthful trumpeter–Booker Little–who seemed well on his way to the stature of Brown and Dorham until his untimely death. In addition, the use of Ray Draper’s tuba as either a third horn or third rhythm instrument provided this briefly-existing group with a rare opportunity for variety.
