What I like most about Norman Meehan’s settings on this album is that words and music are equal participants, and that the final effect feels both surprising and inevitable. The music doesn’t overpower the words; but neither does it defer to them.
Maybe this has something to do with the jazz background that Norman, Hayden, and Hannah share. The collaborative give-and-take of live performance means that hierarchies are missing; nothing is prescribed, and no single element is given preference.
