Paul Dietrich’s fifth album as a leader, A Small Patch of Earth, marks a shift from his recent large-ensemble projects (2019’s Forward, an 18-piece big band, and 2023’s 5+4, for a nine-piece group) to a more intimate and folk-inspired sound.
