"If you were still under the impression that white is just white, you could be musically convinced otherwise with the help of the new album by SCHULTZE EHWALD RAINEY, where even the darkest and the very brightest emerge from the manifold shades of brightness. On SEVEN WHITES the three musicians (Peter Ehwald - saxophone, Stefan Schultze - piano and Tom Rainey - drums) sketch out a complex musical structure, whose brilliance and depth lies precisely in the way they elaborate upon these shades. But this album is also a snapshot. Most of the pieces are short, outlining an image, a motif, or a melody. They keep the listener in suspense, developing an arc that, right at the moment you are settling into it, finds its ending. We are left with the sense of a vibrating echo.
These very unique sound spaces, without any bass, are filled with great virtuosity of expression and with an intuition that speaks of the band's long history together. The recordings were made during different sessions, at three different locations and thus reflect the spontaneity and intensity of touring together, and of coming together in different moods in different places. Bari, Bochum, Berlin: from here the many nuances of white found their way into the pieces. A glistening pure white in Bari, a snowy white tumbling into grey in Bochum and a shadowy, milky white in Berlin. On SEVEN WHITES three strong soloists find each other, dedicating their individual playing skills to being with, and around, each other. Perfecting the art of leaving space for each other, the listener becomes a witness of an emerging musical community, as if observing the emergence of a painting.
Crucial are the shades and intricacies with which the musicians immerse themselves in a rhythm that is sometimes an energetic shared quest, and sometimes a contrapuntal pulsing, which dissolves into a frame of each other. The music on this CD has a magnetism far beyond that of a black and white painting".
