Praised as a unique new voice from Iran TARA TIBA is now noted as one of Australia’s most distinctive and significant musical voices.
Born in Iran and based in Perth, Western Australia, Tara has been acclaimed as an expatriate trailblazer for her extraordinary voice and repertoire that fuses traditional Persian singing with Jazz, Latin, contemporary and experimental music. Tara was born in in 1984 in Tehran, where female singers were prohibited from performing in public after the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
She graduated as an architect in 2006 but also followed her musical heart by studying classical piano, violin and traditional Persian singing under the ‘Radif' system with prominent Iranian vocalist Hengameh Akhavan. This age-old oral transmission from master to pupil accesses the deep cultural tradition of Iran's classical music. More passionate about music than architecture, and desperate to perform in public, Tara moved to Perth in 2012. She studied jazz at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, formed her own band and performed on stage for the first time.
In 2013, she released her debut album, A Persian Dream, a collection of improvised classical Persian poetry with new arrangements of traditional tunes, original compositions and shades of jazz with a Persian twist. Hailed for her spine-tingling voice by The Australian, Tara has since mesmerized audiences around the world including at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art's Norouz at The MET GALA, National Auditorium of Music of Spain, BBV Tivoli Portugal and WOMADelaide festival, sharing the stage with artists such as Portuguese national legend Rui Veloso, Pedro Jóia, João Frade, Marta Pereira da Costa, Piraña and Javier Limòn.
She performed for 50,000 people at the 2016 Perth Festival opening event Home, alongside Tim Minchin, John Butler and the Waifs. For the 2018 Perth Festival event Siren Song, a collaboration with Supple Fox and sound Byron.J Scullin, Tara’s singing was broadcast from an installation of 500 speakers on skyscrapers at dawn and dusk for 10 days across her adopted city.
In March 2019, Tara released her long-awaited second album, OMID, which received a 5 start review in the Australian News paper. This new album is a playful exploration of the musical traditions shared by Iran and Cuba after the Spanish took Middle Eastern soul to Latin America.
The new album features Cuban Grammy Award nominee pianist-composer Ivan Melon Lewis as producer and some of finest Cuban and Iranian musicians. In support of the new album Tara Tiba will be touring internationally with a fantastic line up including Ivan Melon Lewis(Piano), Roman Filio(Sax),Ivan RuizMachado(Bass) and Alfredo Chacon (Percussions)
